Inner Edge and Rubber Seal: What Counts as Direct Contact?

Inner Edge and Rubber Seal: What Counts as Direct Contact?

Direct contact has one clear meaning in a door-sill inspection: the plate's inner edge meets the rubber weather seal at the edge of the upper metal mounting platform. You should not see a strip of body paint between the plate and seal, and the plate should not cover or compress the rubber. Check this boundary before the adhesive liner comes off.

Set the reference surface first

The Mustang S550 Stainless Steel listing describes a flat painted-metal threshold. Remove the stock plastic cover from the intended mounting area, expose the suitable metal platform and identify the seal that the closed door normally meets. Keep the outer slope, carpet and weather seal out of the plate footprint. Supporting metal can remain visible outside the plate and at its ends.

Keep the product rigid and in its supplied outline. Do not stretch a plate across a doorway, bend it onto an outer rocker slope or use a body-paint strip as an inner spacer.

Use a three-state close-up

State What the close-up should show Decision
Pass The inner edge meets the rubber seal directly, the plate rests flat on the metal platform and the plate footprint stays entirely on metal. Continue to the door-clearance and wiring checks.
Hold Body paint remains visible between the plate and seal, or the plate stops short of the seal. Do not bond. Recheck the exact product outline and vehicle application.
Reject The plate overlaps the rubber, rests on plastic or carpet, or touches a moving trim surface. Remove the dry-fit plate and request product-specific review.

Take the close-up from above the inner edge and include enough of the platform to show where the support sits. A product catalog image can identify the Mustang artwork and light zones, but it cannot supply this vehicle-side evidence.

Check contact without changing the artwork

Lay the plate on the platform with its adhesive liner protected. Confirm the Running Horse artwork faces the intended direction and that the Stainless Steel surface keeps the product's supplied shape. The product description says the logo, top light bars and side edge illuminate. Do not modify those zones while correcting a mounting position.

Open and close the door slowly while an installer watches the inner seal, outer plate edge and wire exit. The plate must remain on the upper metal platform without contacting moving trim. If direct seal contact requires a stretched or bent plate, stop. That result indicates an application or surface question, not a reason to force the part into place.

Record the final boundary

  1. Photograph the exposed metal platform with the stock cover removed from the mounting area.
  2. Photograph the inner edge and rubber seal in the same frame.
  3. Mark whether body paint is absent from the boundary and whether the plate stays off the rubber.
  4. Record door-open and door-closed clearance.
  5. Save the exact product URL, set, color and style beside the photos.

For the broader preparation sequence, read the fitment and clearance guide. Browse the Ford door sills collection only after the Mustang application is established. The direct-contact check is a pass or hold decision, not a visual label that can replace mounting evidence.
