Remove and Refit: What Should Happen to the Adhesive Record?

Before lifting a Mustang S550 Stainless Steel sill, photograph its position, wire route and seal boundary. After removal, inspect the exposed metal platform and ask about replacement adhesive. The product page confirms adhesive-backed mounting on a prepared metal threshold, but it does not say that the old backing can be reused.

Photograph the installed state before lifting

Save the exact product page, vehicle details, set and light selection. With the door open, photograph the complete plate, Running Horse artwork, inner rubber seal, outer edge and wire exit. Take a second frame with the light off if the edge and top bars need a physical reference. Mark any existing gap, overlap, lifted corner, damaged surface or wire pinch before removal.

These photos show what was present. If the inner edge did not meet the rubber seal directly, or the plate sat on plastic, carpet or a weather seal, keep that defect visible rather than copying it to the refit.

Use the supplied removal method

Follow the product instructions and use a qualified installer for removal. Protect the plate, wire and vehicle trim while separating the part. Do not pull the cable as a handle, bend the Stainless plate or drag it across the seal. If the edge resists or the route is unclear, stop and ask for help.

The catalog detail shows the product edge, not a safe removal technique. It does not establish adhesive thickness, backing chemistry or reusable bond strength.

Inspect the platform after removal

Once the plate is off, photograph the exposed upper metal platform and the stock plastic cover position. Check whether the platform remains suitable flat painted metal for the named product. Locate the rubber seal and check that a new placement could bring the inner edge directly to it without a body-paint strip or rubber overlap. Keep supporting metal outside the future plate footprint and at the ends.

Describe the old adhesive as an observation: intact, lifted, contaminated, damaged or unknown. Do not call it reusable. Ask LDS or the installer what replacement backing, surface preparation and wait period the exact product requires.

Choose the next safe action

  • Continue only when the vehicle application, metal platform, seal boundary and wire route still match the product.
  • Hold when the platform has changed, the cover cannot be removed from the mounting area, the seal is damaged or the plate would need to stretch or bend.
  • Ask for product-specific guidance when the old adhesive, replacement material or electrical connection is unknown.

A plate that comes off in one piece does not prove that a new bond will hold. Keep the pre-removal and post-removal photos with the product link.
